  1. John Campbell

As of today, 8 May 2020, I now have four of these lamps and will be ordering a fifth one as soon as possible. The ones made for me have the brass font and the burners are a vintage very special U.S. made P&A Flip Top burner from somewhere between the late 1920’s to the 1940’s. I can find no record of actual production dates for these burners and the P&A company was destroyed in a terrible flood in 1955. However, Mr. Kirkman managed to stumble upon a case of these burners, brand new and still in their original packaging. The burners have a hinge that allows the chimney to be simply flipped to the side and back again thus making them very sound for the mechanism that keeps the chimney in place and easy to light without having race to prevent smoke or potentially burning your fingers in the process. Mr. Kirkman had the original chimneys, which has a special lip for mounting purposes, fabricated and assures me that there will be no problem in replacing them should the unthinkable ever occur. My original purchase of this lamp has now been in service for over two years and I fully suspect it will be fully capable to be handed down to generations for many generations to come.

I ordered these lamps as custom made for the brass font and the P&A Flip Top burner due to not only their great looks and meant to be used functionality, as well as an era theme in my home, but also as a real concern about earthquakes where I live. I’m proud to say that I’m in no way disappointed and as of this year they have been fully tested in both the 6.4 foreshock and 7.1 main earthquake, plus the endless aftershocks that went on for a week after, centered in Ridgecrest, California. My nerves were definitely rattled, but the lamps stayed put perfectly. Hopefully they’ll not find themselves being tested like that ever again!

Family and visitors who come for events, holidays, or just to visit, are taken by the beauty of these lamps and the warm aesthetics they present. Whether for theme or on the occasion when the power goes out, these lamps perform superbly.

A hearty Well done to Mr. W.T. Kirkman and his entire staff.
